10 tips to help you choose your bridal makeup artist

It can be difficult to find a professionalmakeup artist in Saskatoon, for your wedding day. Many women I know have never had their makeup professionally done before.

Many blogs and magazines claim that you shouldn’t worry about booking your wedding makeup until the day, six to eight months prior. This is false! You need to be early if you want to have the best selection of suppliers. This is especially important if you are getting married on a busy date, such as a Saturday in the spring or summer, or if you wish to book a popular artist.

For 2021 and 2022 weddings, it is even more crucial to book early. Many 2020 weddings have been delayed by COVID-19. This means that many makeup artists will be booking more weddings in the coming year than usual.

1. Which bridal makeup look do you prefer?

Consider your bridal look and your makeup routine. Do you want a super glamorous look or something more natural? Pinterest and wedding blogs can provide inspiration for many different styles. It is important to know what you are looking for in a mua before you hire them.

2. Ask your friends and family for their recommendations

Think about weddings you’ve been to, and friends/relatives/work colleagues who’ve got married in the past few years. Keep an eye on the wedding photos of your friends via social media. You can see the final results of someone’s wedding makeup in person, rather than seeing them online. Once you have seen the results you like, you can ask the brides who did it if they would recommend them.

Sometimes, a great outcome and a positive recommendation do not always go together! A bride I met recently was beautiful in her wedding dress, but she didn’t want to recommend it to me. She said that the boutique was difficult to work with and that she would have chosen another shop if she had known all the dramas she would go through.

3. Rely on the experts

You might consider using a friend, relative, or professional mua but who is skilled at applying makeup on their own. Get a trial scheduled as soon as possible. You might be amazed at what they can do! However, a person doing their own makeup is quite different from someone who does it for someone else.

Your bridal party may also need to supply their own makeup, brushes and other items. A non-professional shouldn’t expect to have everything that suits all skin types or have enough brushes to do everyone.

Another thing to be aware of when working with a non-professional is how they will not have formal arrangements such as terms and conditions or insurance. You could face problems later on if you don’t have the right insurance or PAT-tested electrical equipment.

Of course, I am biased. For an event like this, I recommend that you hire a professional makeup artist if you aren’t happy with the way they do your makeup and can rely on them 100%.

4. Search on Google, Facebook, and Instagram

If you are far from your destination, make sure you include it in your search. Google might suggest “makeup artists nearby me” but it won’t help if you are at home while you do your research and the venue is located 100 miles away. Although you can pay for travel expenses, it can be quite costly if they are far away.

Use hashtags to search Instagram. For example, if you’re getting married in or near Winchester, hashtags like #winchestermua #muawinchester #winchestermakeupartist #makeupartisthampshire should all bring up makeup artists that work in that area.Instagramcan be a great place for finding makeup artists. It’s visually appealing and allows you to see a lot of their work in one glance.

There are many wedding pages and groups on Facebook that you can use to find recommendations for suppliers. You can also use them to make connections with other brides, especially if your friends are sick of you talking all about your wedding.

Keep in mind that social media is so popular for makeup that not all artists have a website or are regularly updated. Because the posts are dated, it’s easier for you to see what recent images are.

5. Ask your photographer or venue for recommendations

Have you already chosen your photographer or venue? Ask them for their recommendations. You can also check out the makeup artists that were tagged in their weddings via social media.

Some venues prefer suppliers. These are great to add as a shortlist. But be aware that not all venues will allow you to do so. Suppliers may get a kickback for recommending them. However, it is not always sincere. Some venues don’t keep up with their recommended suppliers lists for many years. The number of options for wedding makeup has increased dramatically over the last few years. I don’t recommend that you go with a venue recommendationonly. However, it’s a good idea to add them to your list.

Because they’ve seen the before and afters of brides and how things run on the day of their preparations, photographers can be a good resource. They can see how makeup is applied in photos and recommend that you DO NOT book them.

6. Use online supplier directories

Many directories of suppliers are available online, but some are better than others. Many of the blogs you love have directories for suppliers.

Directory likeMake Me Bridalallow you to view many makeup artists at once. You can also save time and send a request for information to see who is available on your date or get in touch with a specific mua through the Make Me Bridal website.

7. Take a look at their work

Look at the photos of makeup artists on their websites and on social media. Look beyond the “model” photos. Ask to see photos of real brides if all the photos are taken by models in a studio setting. You might also be able see whether the makeup is flawless if thequality很差。你可能没有最好的化妆师, but they may be good at creating beautiful Instagram photos. Also, just because they don’t have a lot of followers doesn’t mean that they aren’t skilled.

Pay attention to lighting and filters. Ask for unfiltered photos if a mua’s photos appear heavily edited or filtered. Some models in social media photos barely have any nostrils, let alone pores. Although makeup can reduce the appearances of eyebags and acne scarring, it cannot erase texture. Sometimes, the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos can be misleading. One might see a before photo in harsh, natural lighting, while another may show a more refined, ring-lit after’ picture. These photos are not meant to be compared like-with-like.

8. Seek out reviews, testimonials, and awards

You can find reviews from makeup artists on sites like Google and Facebook and testimonials from brides on the website or on social media.

They will often talk about other qualities than makeup, such as that the mua helped them decide what they wanted, was friendly and kept them calm on the big event, or that they saved the day when things didn’t go as planned.

This might help you choose a makeup artist.

Industry awards are a great way to show your appreciation for a makeup artist’s work.

9. Set your budget

There are many budget options for wedding makeup, just like with other suppliers. While some makeup artists will list their prices on their websites or give you a quote, others may not. You should ensure that the quote you receive includes travel costs and additional artists, if necessary, so there are no surprises down the road.

Do you plan to pay for your entire bridal party’s makeup? Or are they going to do it themselves? Is the makeup artist available for hairstyling? It is possible to save money by booking hair and makeup services together.

A minimum booking amount or number of clients is required for some wedding makeup artists. This may mean that you cannot book a makeup artist if you are only looking for your own makeup. However, most artists will still be willing to work with you if you pay their minimum fee. You could also consider inviting other people to your wedding who would like their makeup done. However, they would need to be at the same location to do this work.

10. Are you protected?

Is there a contract, terms and conditions, insurance, etc. for the makeup artist? Some makeup artists don’t have contracts, despite the uncertainty presented by COVID-19. This should alarm you. All your suppliers need to have a policy in place to protect you and them when booking their services. This could include a cancellation policy or what to do if they are ill, postpone, cancel, etc.
